John Carroll snapped DePauw's 29-game regular season winning streak, UW-Platteville quarterback Nathan Uselding had a big day as the Pioneers beat UW-La Crosse at home, while Wartburg bounced back from a halftime deficit to win at Loras and most of the rest of the games involving ranked teams were blowouts. Here's the Top 25 recap.
Scott Ballentine found Palmer Samuels in the back of the end zone with 2:07 to play to give DePauw its first lead of the game, but John Carroll marched right back, going 77 yards down the field for the game-winning touchdown with 14.4 seconds left to give the No. 14 Blue Streaks a 31-27 win against the No. 11 Tigers. DePauw picked off Nick Semptimphelter twice, including one in the fourth quarter, but the Blue Streaks got one back before the Tigers finally broke through to take the lead on Samuels' second TD of the day. Semptimphelter hit Shane Lindstrom on a deep ball, going 39 yards down the middle to set the Blue Streaks up on the 20, and after fumbling on first and goal, out of timeouts and running out of daylight after two and half hours of lightning delay, the quarterback found Tyren Montgomery in the back of the end zone for the touchdown. Montgomery caught three touchdown passes as part of a 12-catch, 109-yard day. Semptimphelter was 25-for-34 for 297 yards in the win, which snapped DePauw's 29-game regular season winning streak.
Nathan Uselding bounced back from a subpar outing at UW-River Falls last week and led the UW-Platteville offense with his legs as he ran nine times for 113 yards and a touchdown and threw three touchdown passes as well as the No. 13 Pioneers handed No. 4 UW-La Crosse its first loss of the season, 38-21. Uselding had the red ... or maroon sea part in front of him for a 9-yard touchdown run midway through the first quarter to get UWP on the board, and he followed that with two TD passes before halftime to send Platteville to the locker room up 21-14. Uselding found Trevor Syse on a fourth-down ball down the field for a 31-yard touchdown pass to set the tone in the third quarter, however, and La Crosse was never within 10 points the rest of the way.
The results of the day leave six teams tied for first in the WIAC with 2-1 conference records.
Wartburg bounced back from a halftime deficit and pulled away from Loras for a 40-20 win on the road. The No. 8-ranked Knights trailed the Duhawks 13-7 at halftime before Wartburg scored 20 in the third quarter and 14 in the fourth to pull away for the win. Loras threw for 401 yards on 46-for-64 passing, but ran for minus-24 against the Wartburg defense. Meanwhile, Wartburg ran for 243 yards, including 11 carries for 115 yards for Joe Anderson. It was also the 50th career win for Knights coach Chris Winter.
Logan Lacio came back to the lineup for Whitworth and threw for two touchdowns and ran for another as the Pirates won at No. 24 Linfield, 30-20. Lacio, who left last week's game against George Fox with an injury, came back to complete 24 of 38 passes for 275 yards and two touchdowns, while Luis Salgado ran for 119 yards on 27 carries. The win, coupled with Lewis & Clark's unexpected loss to George Fox, leaves Whitworth and Pacific Lutheran tied for first in the NWC standings at 3-0. Linfield was able to move the ball well, and only turned the ball over twice, but Whitworth was able to control the clock and keep the Wildcat offense off the field. Salgado helped the Pirates kill about half of the fourth quarter with a long drive for a field goal to help Whitworth go up 10, leaving the Wildcats not enough time to respond.
Trey Feeney threw for 374 yards and four touchdowns in his first week as the full-on starter as No. 10 St. John's defeated Concordia-Moorhead 41-6. Dylan Wheeler was the Johnnies' leading receiver and Caden Wheeler was the leading rushing as the two combined for three touchdowns in the win. St. John's limited the Cobber offense to 15-for-32 passing for 160 yards.
Joey McGinnis IV threw for a career high 366 yards and a career best four touchdowns as No. 16 Carnegie Mellon defeated Gettysburg 44-20. The Tartans totaled 532 yards of offense with 416 coming through the air. CMU has won 19 consecutive games when recording 400 yards of total offense.
Christopher Newport improved to 6-0 overall and 3-0 in the New Jersey Athletic Conference as the Captains blanked Kean 49-0. The Captains, ranked 17th in the the D3football.com Top 25, posted 419 total yards in the game and erupted for three scores in a span of just under four minutes in the opening quarter. CNU held a 42-0 edge at the intermission, and scored the only points of the second half on the opening play of the fourth quarter. Connor Barry threw four touchdown passes, setting a program record for career TD passes with 43 in just 25 games played. Other games involving Top 25 teams went as expected, with No. 1 North Central, No. 2 Mount Union, No. 3 Johns Hopkins, No. 5 Salisbury, No. 6 Bethel, No. 12 UW-River Falls, No. 19 Hope, No. 21 Wheaton, No. 22 Berry, No. 23 Cortland and No. 25 Randolph-Macon winning by an average of 47 points.
