PLYMOUTH, Wis. – McKynzee Schepp (Jr.-Marshall, Wis.) became the first female to score points in a game in Lakeland football history but Greenville (Ill.) University scored a touchdown and the go-ahead two-point conversion in the final minutes to defeat the Muskies 29-28 Saturday afternoon at John Taylor Memorial Field.
Schepp made all four of her point after touchdown extra point kicks but the Panthers scored last in a back-and-forth game of touchdowns and spoiled the Muskies' Senior Day, dropping Lakeland to 0-2 on the season. Greenville also won a matchup between former conference foes in the Illini-Badger Football Conference, winning the teams' first meeting since 2007 and defeating the Muskies for the first time since 2000.
With Lakeland clinging to a 28-21 lead, Terrel Graves scored on a 1-yard touchdown run to bring the Panthers within a point with 2 minutes, 42 seconds remaining. Greenville initially attempted the point after touchdown kick which the Muskies blocked up the middle, but a player came off the edge offsides on the play, giving the Panthers a second chance. Greenville decided to go for the two-point conversion from the closer distance and quarterback Max Lynch rolled right, escaped a defender and dove in to give the guests their first lead since going ahead 14-7 midway through the second quarter.
Lakeland had a final chance to win the game, but penalties stunted its final drive. The Muskies could only get to their own 41-yard line before turning the ball over on downs after four straight incomplete passes, allowing the Panthers to run out the game's final 16 seconds.
Lakeland had previously broken a 21-all tie in the fourth quarter when Lamarious Liggins (Fr.-Memphis, Tenn.) caught a 33-yard pass over the middle from Robby Michael (Sr.-Sheboygan, Wis.) for his first collegiate touchdown catch with 5:49 left. Schepp made the extra point, her fourth in four attempts in the game, but Greenville answered by going 62 yards in 11 plays capped by Graves scoring to cap his 120-yard rushing day and Lynch taking in the two-point conversion.
Neither team led by more than seven points in the game which saw both teams score one touchdown in all four quarters and the game tied after the first three periods. Lakeland scored first on its first drive of the game, with an eight-play, 73-yard march capped by Michael hitting Mason Motquin (So.-Forestville, Wis.) for a four-yard touchdown, the sophomore's first career collegiate touchdown catch.
The Panthers tied the game on a 35-yard touchdown pass from Lynch to Ben Cordova midway through the first quarter, and then took the lead by capitalizing after a short Muskies punt, with Xavien Moody running it in from 10 yards out for a 14-7 lead. Lakeland tied it back up late in the half, with an 11-play, 92-yard drive finishing with Michael rushing for a five-yard touchdown with 1:57 left in the second quarter.
Michael scored again on its first drive of the third quarter, taking 17 plays to go 58 yards and cashing in when on fourth down the senior quarterback scrambled in from nine yards out to make it 21-14. Greenville answered again, though, with a reverse catching the Muskies defense off balance and LaShawn Williams running around left end and then crossing the field for a 37-yard touchdown with 3:19 left in the third.
Michael rushed 31 times for 164 yards and two touchdowns and moved with 2,938 career yards now moved into second on Lakeland's all-time career rushing list, surpassing Dezmon Eddie (2,915 yards from 2016-19). He also completed 13 of 32 passes for 177 yards and two scores.
Hassan Rivers (Jr.-Dearborn Heights, Mich.) also had the best rushing day of his Lakeland career with 18 carries for 85 yards. Motquin caught three passes for 52 yards and Caden Kleparski (So.-Unity, Wis.) added three catches for 32 yards.
The Muskies outgained an opponent and did not commit a turnover for the second straight game, this time posting a 455-357 yardage advantage over the Panthers. Lakeland committed 16 penalties for a total of 135 yards, though, including 15 penalties on offense and special teams.
Vyron Rosquist-Wallace (Sr.-Henderson, Nev.) and Shamond Oliver (Sr.-Phenix City, Ala.) led the defense with seven tackles each. Trayvonne Roberts (Jr.-Lynwood, Ill.) forced the game's lone turnover, taking the ball away on a quarterback run for a forced fumble and recovery.
Graves led Greenville with 24 carries for 120 yards and Lynch completed 13 of 21 passes for 150 yards. The Panthers won despite running 30 less plays than Lakeland (88 to 58) and holding the ball for more than nine minutes less than the Muskies (34:41 to 25:19).
Lakeland honored 13 seniors on this year's team before the game: Michael, Oliver, Rosquist-Wallace, Jatron Bevly (Springfield, Ill.), Caleb Besaw (Conroe, Texas), Markese Collins (Phenix City, Ala.), Parker Giese (West Bend, Wis.), Monroe Hobbs (Victoria, Texas), Austin Holmes (Viroqua, Wis.), Jeremy Kobe (Milwaukee, Wis.), Benji Smith (Port Orchard, Wash.), Evan Soto (El Paso, Texas) and Brekkan Spens (Burbank, Calif.).
The Muskies are idle next week before beginning their Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference schedule Saturday, Sept. 27 on the road at Rockford University in Rockford, Ill., at 1 p.m.
