FERRUM, Va. -- Junior quarterback and team captain Carter Sido (Dallas, TX) passed for a game-high and career-high 282 yards and five touchdowns, but Hampden-Sydney College dropped a 41-36 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) football decision on the road at Ferrum College on Saturday afternoon in Ferrum. Sophomore wide receiver Ethan Dowdy (Powhatan) had a game-high and career-high 127 yards receiving and two touchdowns, while redshirt-freshman wide receiver Manning Lasso (Raleigh, NC) had a career-high 103 yards receiving and two touchdowns, as well, for the visiting Tigers (3-3, 1-2), who led the host Panthers (3-3, 1-2) 17-13 at halftime and 23-13 early in the third quarter, before the home team scored four unanswered touchdowns to take control. Senior linebacker and team captain Robert Clarke (Atlanta, GA) had a game-high and career-high 14 tackles for the Garnet & Grey.
H-SC took the opening possession of the game and drove 60 yards on 12 plays with Sido finding senior tight end Sutton Lasso (Raleigh, NC) for the final 10 yards to the end zone on the touchdown pass. Senior placekicker Elijah Swett (Matthews, NC) added the first of his three PAT kicks for the 7-0 advantage at 10:59 of the first quarter. Key to the drive were completions of 13 yards to Manning Lasso and 26 yards to Dowdy, and it remained 7-0 after 15 minutes.
The Tigers took their second possession of the contest and drove nearly the length of the field at 92 yards on 12 plays with Sido connecting with Dowdy for a 13-yard touchdown pass at 14:51 of the second quarter. The PAT kick by Swett made it a 14-0 lead for the visitors. The long scoring drive featured runs of 11 and 13 yards by Sido, along with a 23-yard completion to Dowdy.
FC got on the scoreboard with a 28-yard field goal by Seth Deaton at 8:37, but the Garnet & Grey answered back with a 24-yard field goal by Swett at 6:35 for a 17-3 margin. The quick five-play, 61-yard drive included a 55-yard pass play from Sido to Dowdy.
The Panthers added their first touchdown at 3:18 on a 15-yard pass from Zach Wyatt to Josh Powell with Deaton adding the PAT kick, and Deaton converted a 22-yard field goal on the final play of the first half as the home team was within 17-13 at halftime.
H-SC forced a turnover on the first offensive play of the third quarter with freshman defensive end Jordan Williams (Washington, DC) recovering a fumble at the FC 27-yard line. It took just two plays to score as sophomore running back Terry Hicks (Clayton, NC) ran for 17 yards before Sido found Dowdy for a 10-yard touchdown pass at 14:11. Swett's PAT kick was wide left, his first miss of the season, and the Tigers led 23-13.
The Panthers responded with four unanswered touchdowns, scoring two in the third quarter and two more in the fourth quarter, to take a 41-23 advantage with 7:18 left to play. Jahylen Lee scored three touchdowns with runs of three yards (10:40, third quarter), 32 yards (00:05, third quarter) and four yards (7:18, fourth quarter), while Zach Daigler recovered a blocked punt in the end zone for the other touchdown (13:24, fourth quarter). Deaton added all four PAT kicks.
The Tigers weren't done yet, however, as Sido and Manning Lasso connected on a pair of 40-yard touchdown plays down the right sideline … the first at 5:41 to complete a four-play, 66-yard possession and the second with 3:11 remaining to finish a quick two-play, 81-yard possession. Sido had a 16-yard run on the first score, while he found Sutton Lasso for a 41-yard pass play ahead of the second score. The visitors failed to convert a two-point pass play after the first score, while Swett added the PAT kick after the second score.
Unfortunately, H-SC never got the ball back as FC was able to run out the final 3:10 with a pair of third-down conversions before a kneel-down to end the contest.
Sido passed for his game-highs and career-highs of 282 yards (12-25-0) and five touchdowns with no interceptions, adding 69 yards rushing on 10 attempts for H-SC. Hicks rushed for 48 yards on 16 attempts. Dowdy had his game-high and career-high 127 yards receiving on five receptions and two touchdowns, adding 12 yards rushing on three attempts. Manning Lasso had his career-high 103 yards receiving on four receptions and two touchdowns, while Sutton Lasso added 49 yards receiving on two receptions and one touchdown.
Clarke finished with his game-high and career-high 14 tackles, including 1.0 for loss, for Tigers. Freshman linebacker Frank Brewer (Charlotte, NC) and junior strong safety Markevus Graves-Franklin (Lynchburg) each added nine tackles—career-highs for both with Graves-Franklin adding a pass breakup. Senior linebacker and team captain Brendan Wallace (Virginia Beach) had eight tackles, including 0.5 for loss, and quarterback hurry, while freshman cornerback Parks Cromwell (Charlotte, NC) contributed seven tackles and a pass breakup.
Wyatt passed for 133 yards (14-24-1) and one touchdown with one interception thrown for FC. Lee had a game-high 174 yards rushing on 30 attempts and three touchdowns, and Caleb Holland had 76 yards rushing on 17 attempts. Ian Ashworth had six tackles, including 0.5 for loss, for the Panthers.
H-SC returns home next week to welcome ODAC member Averett University on Saturday, October 26, at 1 p.m. on Fulton Field at Lewis C. Everett Stadium. It's Homecoming Weekend on the Hill.
