BALTIMORE, MD – The ninth-ranked Johns Hopkins football team jumped out to a 35-0 lead after one quarter, pushed the lead to 63-0 at the half and cruised to a 70-0 victory over visiting Juniata at Homewood Field Saturday afternoon. The win improves the Blue Jays' record to 3-0 overall and 2-0 in the Centennial Conference, while the Eagles slip to 0-3 overall and 0-2 in the Centennial.
A 29-yard Spencer Uggla touchdown run capped the Blue Jays' first drive to make it 7-0 less than three minutes in and Hopkins would add four touchdowns in a span of less than five minutes late in the opening period to build the 35-0 lead.
Ryan Stevens bookended the 28-point spurt with touchdown passes to Quinn Revere (3 yards) and Artie Collins (14), while Uggla and Geoff Schroeder added short scoring runs to account for the four late first-quarter scores. Two of the scoring drives covered less than 10 yards as the Blue Jays turned a fumbled snap by the Juniata punter and an interception by Jameson Lajoie into the Uggla and Schroeder scores.
Stevens added two more touchdown passes to Revere (21) and Emmett Turner (1) before turning things over to Bay Harvey midway through the second period. Harvey connected with Chris Pantelis from 19 yards out and a two-yard Jacob Chapman touchdown run in the final minute of the half accounted for the 63-0 score at intermission.
The Blue Jays forced four Juniata turnovers as Lajoie, Josh Andersson and Luca Lutzel all had interceptions and Xavier Newell recovered a fumble on a kickoff return. Hopkins also held Juniata to -14 rushing yards and 123 yards of total offense. This is the first time Johns Hopkins has held the opposition to negative rushing yards since November 7, 2009, when the Blue Jays held F&M to -20 yards in a 51-13 victory.
Stevens was 14-of-16 for 143 yards and four touchdowns; three Blue Jay quarterbacks combined to go 22-of-26 for 231 yards and five scores. Chapman paced a Blue Jay rushing attack that generated 283 yards and five touchdowns as he had 81 yards and the one score on 15 carries.
Notes: Revere has had two touchdown receptions in each of the last four games dating back to last season. JHU has scored at least 35 points in a school-record nine straight games. The 63-point first-half broke the previous JHU record for points in a half; the record of 49 had been set at McDaniel in 2017.
Johns Hopkins will return to Homewood Field on Friday, September 17 when the Blue Jays welcome Moravian for a Centennial Conference game (7 pm).
