Lexington, Va., Oct. 7, 2017 – The Washington University in St. Louis football team suffered its fourth-straight defeat with a 28-21 loss at Washington and Lee University Saturday in Lexington, Va.
Junior wide receiver Jason Singer had a career-day hauling in seven receptions for 130 yards and three touchdowns. Sophomore quarterback Johnny Davidson was 33-of-45 for 319 yards and three touchdowns, but was sacked five times and picked off two times.
Washington & Lee improves to 3-2 with the win, while WashU dropped to 1-5.
The Generals, who entered the game ranked second in NCAA Division III in rushing offense (394.3), ran for 433 yards in the win. Washington & Lee quarterback Matt Sgro had 146 rushing yards on 22 carries and three TDs, while running back Josh Breece picked up 125 yards on 24 carries.
WashU fell behind 14-0 in the opening six minutes of the contest. Jimmie Johnson scored from 46 yards out on the Generals first possession. After a botched fake punt on the WashU 41-yard line, Sgro scampered in from six-yards out.
The Bears answered back with a 43-yard TD pass from Davidson to Singer with 1:22 left in the first quarter to make it 14-7.
Washington & Lee scored a TD with 3:15 left in the second quarter to push the advantage to 21-7. The Bears responded with an 11-play, 85-yard drive, as Davidson connected with Singer across the middle for a 17-yard TD to make it 21-14 at half.
The Generals ran for 270 yards in the first half, including 162 in the first quarter. Davidson was efficient completing 13-of-16 passes for 129 yards and two TDs.
After a scoreless third quarter, Sgro scored from 41 yards out with 7:31 to play to push the advantage to 28-14.
It took WashU just 51 seconds to answer right back as Singer hauled in a 53-yard touchdown pass from Davidson to cut the lead to 28-21.
Senior defensive back Nick Doctors made a season-high 12 tackles (10 solo), while senior defensive lineman Nick Leduc tied a career-high with seven stops (five solo).
Sophomore running back John Fisher ran for a career-high 83 yards on 11 carries, as WashU totaled 432 yards of total offense.
Davidson had a 73-yard punt in the first quarter, and all three of his punts landed inside the 20. He finished the day with a 52.7 average.
WashU hosts Buena Vista University (2-2, 1-2 IIAC) on Saturday, Oct. 14, at 1 p.m. This game marks the Bears fifth home game of the season.
