LOS ANGELES — Kwame Do ran for 169 yards, Oxy's defense played its best game of the season and the Tigers bounced back from a loss last weekend with a 21-14 win over Claremont-Mudd-Scripps 21-14 on Homecoming Night at Jack Kemp Stadium on Saturday.
The Tigers improve to 4-2 overall and 3-1 in SCIAC play. Claremont-Mudd-Scripps falls to 2-4 and 1-3.
Player of the Game: Do averaged 8 yards per carry, with his longest run going for 30. He's averaging 96.4 yards per game this season.
Oxy Defense: Led by Devin Chapman's 7.5 tackles and Aaron Noffke's two sacks, Oxy kept the Stags scoreless in the first half, taking a 14-0 lead into halftime.
The Stags were able to move the ball, gaining 231 of their 347 yards on the ground, but Oxy managed to come up with key fourth-down stops, including three in the fourth quarter.
Matthew Mulvehill was second on the Tigers with 7 tackles and Noffke and Nicholas McHugh each added 5.5. Shay Mueller, Chaz Shizumura and Nicholas Mungia each broke up a pass.
14 points is the lowest score the Tigers have held an opponent's offense to this season. The second-best was 17 against Whittier.
Turning Point: Dallas Gosselin came up with the play of the game, sacking Trey Reynolds on fourth down to end a CMS drive with 9:43 left in the fourth quarter. On Oxy's next possession, Bryan Scotthit Samuel Crizer on the sideline, who sprinted past the Stags defense for a 45-yard touchdown reception, putting the Tigers up 21-7.
First Half Scores: Scott finished with 284 yards on 20 for 30 passing, including three touchdowns. Two of them were in the first half.
Scott hit Caleb Mitchell on a blown coverage for a 40-yard score, capping an eight-play, 94-yard opening drive. The sophomore also hit Cordell Harris for a 17-yard touchdown just before halftime.
Harris led Oxy with eight catches for 76 yards. Crizer had four catches for 81.
Chasing Records: Oxy wide receiver Samuel Stekol, who came into the game needing 163 yards to pass Matthew Tuckness and move up to second all-time in receiving yards, got off to a quick start with three catches for 56 yards, but had to leave the game with an injury. He returned for a few third down possessions in the fourth quarter.
CMS Standouts: Quarterback Trey Reynolds led the Stags with 113 yards rushing and 116 yards passing. Nick Gott added 93 yards rushing on 19 carries and Ryan Farney had five catches for 68 yards.
On defense, Griffin Lazarus and James Ingram led the Stags with six tackles each.
Next Game: The Tigers next face Pomona-Pitzer on Nov. 1 at 7 p.m. in the "Battle of the Drum," the longest standing college football rivalry in Southern California.
