CINCINNATI, OHIO – Manchester University's offense kept its roll going Saturday, Sept. 27, compiling 428 yards. However, a four-touchdown third quarter from host Mt. St. Joseph University turned out to be the difference in a 49-17 Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference final at Schueler Field.
The Black and Gold (2-2 overall, 1-1 HCAC), looking to remain unbeaten at this early stage of the conference season, were headed in the right direction in the first half. A one-yard sneak from junior quarterback Logan Haston (Avon, Ind.) and a fumble recovery in the end zone from senior running back Austin Adams (Dowagiac, Mich.), with a successful 25-yard field goal by freshman placekicker Andrew Coe (Huntington, Ind.) put the visitors up 17-14 at the break.
From there, the host Lions (3-1 overall, 2-0 HCAC) got their offense moving. A pair of 50-yard-plus scoring tosses from quarterback Greg Simpson highlighted the home side's third quarter and began a span of 35 unanswered points. The Spartans' offense stagnated in the second half, held up by three interceptions and a possession stopped on downs while getting into opponent territory three times.
Haston topped the offense in rushing and passing. He carried the ball 14 times for 74 times with the touchdown included and threw for 257 yards to move his string of 240-yard-plus contests to four straight. The quartet of sophomore wide receiver Dakota Nelson (Fairland, Ind.), senior wide receiver Collin Huffine (Centerville, Ind.), junior wide receiver Evan Rice (Gosport, Ind.) and senior tight end Michael Love (Bloomfield, Ind.) each had multiple receptions.
The Spartans' defense was led by several individuals as well. Freshman linebacker Tyler Katschke (Winamac, Ind.) chipped in a team-leading eight tackles, while sophomore defensive lineman Daniel Heim (Goshen, Ind.) turned in a pair of sacks; sophomore defensive back Jarvis Mitchell (South Bend, Ind.) recorded an interception; and sophomore defensive back Nathan Birk (Indianapolis, Ind.) and senior defensive lineman Stephen Coble (Edwardsburg, Mich.) both recovered fumbles.
MU continues league play Saturday, Oct. 4. Preseason favorite Franklin College visits Carl W. Burt Memorial Field for a 1:30 p.m. kickoff.
