William Paterson Falls to Brockport, 55-34

WAYNE, N.J. – William Paterson (2-4, 0-3 NJAC) ended its three-game home stand with a 55-34 loss to Brockport (2-3, 1-1) Oct. 12.

The Golden Eagles received the opening kickoff and Dan Andrews found the end zone on the second snap, receiving the toss on the sweep and sprinting down the left sideline for a 63-yard touchdown and handing Brockport a 7-0 lead less than one minute into the game. With 4:52 left in the first quarter, Wayne Bonsell again handed the ball off to Andrews, who ran off right tackle and cut inside for a 13-yard touchdown that made it a 14-0 score.

A 31-yard field goal by junior Robert Sinegra (Wharton, N.J./Morris Knolls) inside by left upright put the Pioneers on the board with 2:30 remaining in the first quarter and cut the lead to 14-3.

Bonsell completed an eight-yard touchdown pass to Andrews with 12:13 showing on the clock in the second quarter. The extra point attempt was wide left, but the Golden Eagles had forged a 20-3 lead.

After forcing a Pioneer three-and-out, the Brockport offense came back on the field and Bonsell quickly completed a 57-yard pass to Darryl Tompson to set up the Golden Eagles at the WP-20. After two more quick gains, Bonsell handed the ball to Andrews, who leaped over the pile for his fourth touchdown of the game (27-3, 9:22).

The Pioneers returned the ensuing kickoff to their own 10, and on third-and-10, senior quarterback Ryan Gresik (Newton, N.J./Newton) completed a pass to sophomore running back Matt Deiana (Somers, N.Y./Somers) for 14 yards. Gresik then found senior Mike Vannucci (Bethpage, N.Y./Plainedge) for a 25-yard completion, and ran the ball himself for 15 yards to set up the Pioneers on the Brockport 40-yard line. A Gresik-to-Rich Vivian (West Long Branch, N.J./Shore Regional) 15-yard gain and a three-yard pass to Darius Kersey (Dover, N.J./Dover) put the ball at the Brockport-21 and set up a 38-yard field goal from Sinegra to make it a 27-6 contest with 4:16 remaining in the half.

Highlighted by a 23-yard completion on fourth-and-one, Brockport set up an eight-yard touchdown run for Shireem Cobb 1:12 remaining before halftime (34-6).

After getting three quick first downs to start the second half, Gresik completed a pass to Vivian, who broke two tackles and was finally brought down at the Brockport one-yard line for a gain of 24. Kersey covered the final yard on the ground for the touchdown (34-13, 11:49).

After trading three-and-outs, Levi Clarke fumbled senior Julian Frazier's (Plainfield, N.J./North Plainfield) punt, and the ball was recovered by freshman defensive back Pat Manna (Somerville, N.J./Somerville) at the Brockport-44. However, Ross Ragonesi intercepted a Gresik pass in the end zone for a touchback, thwarting the Pioneers' chance to capitalize on the turnover.

Starting at their own 20, the Golden Eagles engineered an 80-yard drive that culminated in a 15-yard touchdown run for Bonsell (41-13, 4:18).

Less than four minutes into the fourth quarter, Jamar Bussey (Paulsboro, N.J./Paulsboro) and Tyree Ellis (Paulsboro, N.J./Paulsboro) brought down the Brockport punter on the Golden Eagles' 39 after a bad snap. Gresik was quick to take advantage of the field position, turning back-to-back broken plays into positive gains with his feet, including a 15-yard touchdown (41-20, 12:53)

Brockport answered on its next drive when Andrews found pay dirt for the fifth time with a carry off left tackle (48-20, 9:19).

Junior linebacker Jedd Blackowski (West Milford, N.J./West Milford) forced quarterback Jason Howard to fumble a bobbled snap that was recovered by senior linebacker Bobby Moriggia (Eldred, N.Y./Eldred Central), who returned it 47 yards for the defensive touchdown and a 48-27 score with 5:33 to play.

The Pioneer offense got the ball right back when Ellis recovered Sinegra's on-side kick at the WP 45. After Gresik completed passes to Kersey (20 yards) and Vivian (12 yards), two Pioneers penalties set up a first-and-25 for the Pioneers on the Brockport-38. Vannucci caught two passes for three and 20 yards to bring up third-and-two. The Pioneers converted the third down as Kersey bounced off the defender and crossed the goal line from 15 yards out (48-34, 3:13).

During their next possession, the Golden Eagles decided to go for it on fourth-and-one and Cobb broke up the right sideline for a 66-yard touchdown to finish the scoring at 55-34 lead with 2:40 remaining in the game.

Kersey rushed for 34 yards and two touchdowns on five attempts, and Deiana ran seven times for 42 yards. Vivian caught six passes for 94 yards, and Vannucci hauled in four for 55 yards. Gresik finished 18-for-34 for 257 yards, and rushed eight times for 55 yards and a touchdown.

Junior defensive lineman Pat Thomas (Lodi, N.J./Lodi) and senior linebacker David Zurla (Rutherford, N.J./Rutherford) each finished with a game-best 11 tackles. Junior defensive back Elijah DeGuzman (Pennsauken, N.J./Pennsauken) and sophomore safety Dan Eremita (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y. Lakeland) recorded 10 tackles apiece.

Frazier averaged 38.4 yards on seven punts, and Deiana returned four kickoffs for 69 yards.

Bonsell was 16-for-27 for 217 yards and one touchdown under center, and gained 44 yards on the ground while scoring once. Andrews rushed for 282 yards and four touchdowns and caught two passes for 21 yards and a score.

Jake Brickler led the Brockport defense with eight tackles (four solo). Ragonesi and Anthony Bianchi each recorded an interception.
