Two Region 3 conferences will get an up-close and personal look at each other this Division III football season, as the Southern Athletic Association and the Old Dominion Athletic Conference will square off in a number of games. For the SAA, these games help fill the gap in their schedules left late in the spring when Birmingham-Southern announced that it was closing, and for the ODAC, it helps bridge the one-year gap before Roanoke's football program goes varsity in 2025.
The scheduling agreement sees games up and down the conferences: Berry will travel to Randolph-Macon; Hampden-Sydney will play Centre, Washington and Lee goes to Trinity (Texas), Bridgewater plays at Millsaps, Rhodes is at Shenandoah and Guilford hosts Sewanee.
For the ODAC, these games replace the non-conference games between conference foes originally slated to take place on Sept. 21.
"We are happy to partner with the SAA in this scheduling solution for the 2024 season,” said ODAC commissioner Brad Bankston. “By working together, we’ve been able to accommodate the teams available for competition in Week 3. I look forward to watching these matchups play out this fall.”
"We are grateful to our partners at the ODAC for working together to find a positive solution that met both of our needs,” said SAA commissioner Stacey LaDew. “This 2024 football scheduling opportunity gives us a solution to a short-term issue and provides some marquee matchups on the gridiron across both leagues. I applaud our coaches and administrators for working together to find a positive solution to some unsavory issues.”
